Brief Answer:
Acute Laryngitis usually recovers in two weeks.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query.

1. Acute Laryngitis usually recovers in two weeks.

2. If it lasts longer, if there is no resolution of symptoms including loss of voice, if there is breathlessness or if there is any other cause (such as reflux), you should get examined. A Videolaryngoscopy (VL'Scopy) will settle the diagnosis.

3. I do prescribe antibiotics, though they may not be of much use in viral laryngitis. They help prevent secondary bacterial infection. Supportive treatment including voice rest, adequate fluids, anti-allergic, mucolytic, anti-inflammatory (including steroids if not contraindicated), anti-reflux medication, medicated gargles and home remedies help in resolving this quickly. Mild laryngitis can settle with only voice rest no other active treatment.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.

Regards.
