Posted on Thu, 8 May 2014
Question: My father was a dialysis patient and had high BP for the past one month which we were not able to control. Due to which he got a brain haemorrhage and is bed ridden. 2) Earlier he was not responding when we used to call, but now he looks at us and even gives us a smile. He is now at home, since doctor has told us that there is no further treatment. 3) His right side is paralysed. 4) He is been fed by nasal. Every 2 hrs. we give his liquid diet. I would like to know why he is fed through nasal and not mouth. Can we stop this nasal feed and start with mouth. Or can you suggest some good doctor who can help us to bring him out of this condition. Awaiting your quick response.

Brief Answer: How long ago was he paralysed... Detailed Answer: Hi, I empathize with your father's condition. But I am glad he is on recovery process now. If the stroke was recent - a month or two ago, he has good chances of recovery with active physiotherapy. Therefore please clarify how long ago did he sustain this stroke. As far as feeding is concerned, his doctors would have suggested Ryle's tube feed (nasal tube) if he was concerned his swallowing reflex / gag reflex is poor. A poor gag increased chances of aspiration. Therefore any attempt to start mouth feed should be done under guidance of trained expert. If he has a physiatrist working on him at home, you may check with them about his gag. If not, please attempt oral feeds under his treating physicians guidance. I stress that he consults a physiatrist for active rehabilitation especially if the stroke is recent. There are many rehabilitation experts who come every day in sessions at reasonable cost. Visit the nearest physiotherapy and rehabilitation centre and strike a deal. Hope this answers your query. Let me know if you need clarifications. Regards
