How Long Should Thyroid Medication Be Continued?

default
Posted on Wed, 15 Feb 2017
Question: Dear Doctor, XXXX takes Thyronorm 125 mcg daily for Thyroid. Should she continue taking that? Also seeing her report, do you advise we consult a cardiologist or just exercises and avoiding high calorie foods would do for the moment. The report specifies her hs-CRP as High Risk and hence the concern.

Brief Answer:
Please attach all reports!

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for choosing health care magic for your question.

CRP are indicator of future risk of cardiac ailments,However CRP levels are mostly determined by genetics of patient and is inherited from parents.CRP levels can not be altered by any medications or exercise. However high crp puts you at high risk of having cardiac disease in future but it does not mean that you are definitely going to have cardiac disease in future.
I would request you to upload her reports as i could not see any attachments with your question,So comments on thyronorm can be made only after seeing her latest TSH levels.
please attach the reports or you can mail them to YYYY@YYYY with subject as "Attn: Dr. Rishu Saxena".

.

Detailed Answer:
Hi again,
Have gone through her reports.
Her Tsh is normal so for a month keep her on alternate day125mcg and 100mcg dose. After a month repeat Tsh.If its normal we can taper the dose to 100mcg daily.
Her lipoprotein a and CRP levels are high,Both of them are indicator of risk of cardiac disease in future, and both of them are genetically decided,Hence she is at increased cardiac risk but it doesn't means that she is going to have a cardiac disease for sure.So don't panic,Her lipid profile is normal.
She should follow a healthy life style-
No smoking or alcohol.
Brisk walking for 20 minutes every day.
Eat a lot of vegetables and fruits.
Avoid over oily and fatty foods.
Avoid dairy products, red meat and egg yolk.
A antioxidant like Tab supradyn should be taken every day by her,They are scavengers of free radicals and lowers cardiac risk.

Yes a cardiology consultation can be done for a secondary opinion.

Thank you.
