How Long Would Steroid Stay In The System?

default
Posted on Wed, 7 Aug 2024
Question: Hi, Dr. Spaho and a Happy New Year to you. Just a quick two part question. I did have the implant and the TN2 pain has spiked and radiated. My oral surgeon (who knows nothing about facial pain) is willing to order a steroid called Kenalog and inject into the gums. Just wanted to get your opinion before I have him do this - would this steroid be of any help to the TN2 symptoms, no help, or worse, make symptoms elevate? And if done, how long would that steroid stay in the system? Thanks so much as always.

Brief Answer:
I would explain as follows.

Detailed Answer:
Hello again and happy new year to you too!

I have read your new question about the possible Kenalog injection into your gums.

It is true that local injection of steroid antiinflammatory drugs may help quickly reduce inflammation and its accompanying symptoms such as pain, swelling, etc. but the right medicines and doses should be used when it comes to mucosae.

Kenalog or triamcinolone is used actually for injections in cases of atypical pain syndromes since it will be injected into the gums, smaller doses ( 1/2 of the normal dose used elsewhere for example should be used.

I think you can accept the injection, it probably will settle down the pain aggravated by the implant.

Hope this helps.

Take care.

It does. Thank u. Since u are head and shoulders above any neurologist over here, when u get a minute, would u please comment on what I was told by my doctor. This implant was placed in the lower teeth which started new pain in the lower branch (which was formerly quiet) since pain was only in middle. Now it is in both branches. Was thinking of having implant removed but neurologist said it would make no difference to the pain and may even aggravate everything more. Just wanted to see if u agree with his opinion.. Thanks so much and take good care.......

Detailed Answer:
Hello again and thanks for your kind words.

I agree with the Neurologist's opinion, if you remove the implant, it may add additional trauma to that area possibly getting the pain worse.

So, in my opinion, better wait for the new pain to settle down after this implantation.

Most likely the pain is caused by local trauma and should subside with time.

Take care.
