How Many Liters Of Water Does A Person Need Per Day?

I was wondering about amount of water per day one should consume. I'm 36 years old, don't smoke, exercise regularly, and am trying to lose weight (including a healthier diet) and also lower my blood pressure (which is in the prehypertensive range). For many years, I have drank a lot of water and never really considered if I might actually be drinking TOO much. I drink a glass of water:
- When I get up (12 oz)
- Morning supplements (12 oz)
- When I exercise (12+ oz [probably closer to 16])
- After exercise (12 oz)
- Evening supplements (12 oz)
- Before bed (12 oz)
- I generally also have 2 cups (also 12 oz each) of coffee or tea per day
I recently read an article that too much water can actually cause higher blood pressure (since the cardiovascular system has to process it all) and slow down metabolism. Would it be worth trying cutting back, say using 8 oz glasses instead?
Thanks!
Around 2 liter per day
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome.
This is Dr Sameer, cardiologist.
Water is extremely important for our body. Deficiency & excess both are harmful.
Earlier it was said that drink at least 2 ltr water per day to be healthy. This holds good for today also, but they have slightly modified it. It is now said that drink 2 ltr water per day but if you are not losing same amount of water from body, than taking this much water per day can cause dilution of salts in body like sodium & potassium.
So drink that much water which you loose everyday. If you exercise & work out a lot drink 1 to 1.5 ltr extra to the amount of urine output.
Normal heart can always cope up with the load of extra fluid. It is not the cause. The cause is dilution of body salts.
I hope this answers your question.
Good luck
Take care
