Question: Hi, let me fill you in on my self-first: I am 60 years old, female. I have had a hysterectomy. Smoker 2 packs a day. Have tried to quit several times, but have not been successful. But the main problem is about 7 years ago I developed severe allergies. It started with sumac trees in my yard, which sent me to the hospital. Then I had several anaphylaxis episodes from the following list coconut, almonds, peanuts, apples, peaches, some chocolates, So basically I have tried to stay away from all nuts, and about the only fruit I eat is bananas and oranges, strawberries or any berries. I use Epi- pens, my family doctor wants me to go to a allergy specialist. He has me take a Pepcid and Zertec in the morning and Pepcid and Benadryl in the evening every day. Which helps, but not always. My problem is I don’t have insurance and I don’t have a lot of money. Just keeping epi -pens is really a strain on the family finances. I have read that the allergy testing is about 60 % accurate. That is to say about 60 % false positives. I just don’t have a lot of faith in it anyway. About 20 years ago I had seasonal allergies, I had insurance and went through the skin prick tests and It really didn’t help, that doctor put me on Claritin D which I could have avoided all the test and took it anyway. I read on every label, and try to be very careful about what I eat. But I keep swelling on my face and sometime on my body giant hives I take extra Benadryl and hope it works I only take the epi-pen when swelling is in my mouth tongue or throat. My question is can the allergist really help me or is it mostly just hype. I know that I am just finding out by trial and error what I am allergic to. But in the end isn’t that what a allergist will do?

Brief Answer:
Consultation with Immunologist is very high

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

You seem to have intrinsic allergic susceptibility which is causing you these issues.

Hence these issues should be thoroughly screened by an Immunologist in detail.

It's advisable to screen yourself for connective tissue disorders if any.

Consultation with an Immunologist is most helpful.

Post your further questions if any
