Question: my sister is bedridden and has been all her life. She has started losing a lot of muscle in her but area. everywhere else is ok. should we be concerned. She is 39 and also suffer from occasional seizures
Brief Answer:
Surely of concern
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
If a bedridden patient starts loosing muscles all over and particularly in butt area it is of a concern.
The most probable causes are:
Utilization of muscles for energy by body in absence of fat and carbohydrates.
If of butt area then any local causes including any spine problem should be ruled out.
You can certainly get an opinion of your Doctor, get relevant blood tests and adjust he diet as per the advise of your Doctor and/or Dietitian to overcome the negative balance.
This also helps to rule out any other causes on examination.
I hope this answers your query and helps in decision making.
