Question: my husband had a ct scan after a x ray found nodules In his lungs. one. 11mm and one 7mm. the ct scan showed them as calcified granulomas. however he has had this cough for months. how likely is it that the ct scan would have missed cancer
Brief Answer:
Highly sensitive tool for lung tumors
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
CT scan is extermely reliable and the most and first opted tool to understand the lung nodules. It has a high sensitivity and low error rate.
It is the job of the radiologist to take time and his experience to rate the lung tumors. Radiologist also relies on various computer aided detection tools like Support Vector Machine (SVM) and a Multi-Layer Perceptron to reduce his chance of error.
However follow up scans are also important to check the size and progression of these nodules.
