Question: What is the most effective way to manage lactic acid build up in my legs following intense workouts? I have cramping at night that is not potassium nor magnesium related (take supplements) and am wondering if its related to the lactic acid.

Brief Answer:
Can be lactic acid or thyroid imbalance.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The muscle cramps after an exercise can be due to dehydration, muscle fatigue or electrolyte abnormalities or lactic acid accumulation. It is best to drink sufficient fluid and see that your intake of electrolytes (sodium, potassium, magnesium ) is sufficient. You can drink Oralyte for this after every 15 minutes during the exercise.
One of the potential causes is hypothyroidism which is a low level of thyroid hormone. This is a hormone that plays an important part in the metabolism of the body. You can get your blood levels evaluated.
Avoid acidic foods and drinks like tomatoes and vinegar which blocks the body’s natural ability to absorb calcium leading to muscle aches & muscle fatigue.
To avoid lactic acid build up in your muscles you can take a light breakfast, preferably some lean protein and/or complex carbohydrate with a little healthy fat-- before the exercise or immediately after the exercise.
I hope this answers your query.
