Thanks for the query.
Urinary incontinence is mostly side effect of child bearing
stress ,weakening the pelvic support in females. It forms a uncomfortable / infection prone hurdle in old age health & management I understand your concern.
Your mother is 86-Is she still moving or bed ridden? the management differs accordingly.
The few things I would suggest are-
*Avoid friction.
- by changing position every 2 hours.
- Change the size/ type of Diaper she is using ,to avoid friction with the
skin.(Different shields,protective undergarments,diapers are avialable)
- In case she is bed ridden, a small incontinence pad with a thick adsorbant underspread can be used.
- repeated chnage, use of dis infeca=tants in the room/surroundings , cleanliness are demanded in this case.
* self retaining catheter( Foly's catheter) can be used alternatively . It is to be inserted under strict aseptic precaustions & maintained under expert guidence
* To avoid urine infection is greatest challenge in such patient-so to be under an expert Urologist doctor's care is the only option.
*Skin care- a Dry & unhealthy skin is more prone to pressure /friction.
Keep skin clean. put antibiotic ointment,if it is swollen& has infection.
Apply soothing creame/ Callendulla ointment for bruised skin.
* A diet with good nutrition/vitamin( VitaminA,vit C vit. B )suplement is to
be assured.
* Apart from this regular medication for her health problems specially
diabetes are essential.
In case your mother is otherwise fit she should go for -
- Timevoiding- to void urine before the leakage- the time can be set after observing leakage pattern.
- Kegle's pelvic exercises,
- Plastig vaginal cones of increasing weightare used for involuntory muscle contractions of pelvic muscles ,thereby strengthening
pelvic floor.
* Medicines - certain medicines do help, they need to be prescribed by expert after evaluation of patien's condition.
