How To Confirm Paternity Of A Child?

default
Posted on Mon, 3 Nov 2014
Question: Im stressed, me and my boyfriend got together in March 2014, we found out that a girl he was seeing in January until February 2nd is pregnant and she is due November 13th 2014. She also slept with another guy on the 26th of February 2014 when she was drunk. My boyfriend used condoms every time he had intercourse with her.

She definitely had a period January 9th and had regular cycles, so this means she was due 6th February 2014 (which would work out with her dating scan dates). However, she felt like she was coming on her period around the 6th and she took the 3 day pill, Norethisterone I believe, and delayed her period because she wanted to go out on her birthday weekend. She then had a period 12th of February until the 17th of February (maybe till a bit later). If this is the first day of her last period (the 12th) then this means that the guys date of intercourse and this period work out for the due date to be November 19th 2014. If we were going by the date my boyfriend had intercourse with her last, she would be due October 26th 2014. Please help me, who is most likely to be the father? This girl is staying her period could have been implantation bleeding, which I know happens, but the due dates from the dating scans really don't add up and she had a long bleed like a normal period. Also, if her period was due around the 6th of February, prime ovulation times would be around the 20th of February but if her period was delayed, which it was, would this move the ovulation date to the 23rd - 29th of February?

Thanks for your help. Please help me, I can't cope with thinking some other girl is having the love of my lifes child!

Brief Answer:
Another guy most probably his father.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for writing to us about it.

I can read your concern about it.

With your description, In my opinion another guy is most likely his father.

Her due date is 13 November 2014, if from this date we calculate her most probable sexual intercourse date they are from 14 February to 20 th February.

Your boyfriend did sex till 2 nd February and sperm can survive in the vagina for 3-5 days, and then in this scenario also her due date will be different.

So please do not worry about it.

Your boyfriend is likely not his father.

Paternity can only be confirmed by DNA testing after birth of a child.

Hope I have answered your query if you have further questions I will be happy to assist you.

Good luck.

Thank you, so could Norethisterone cause delay in ovulation. Is it almost impossible for her to be due on this date if my boyfriend had intercourse on the 2nd of February? Im so sad and it's really affecting my health too.

Brief Answer:
Norethisterone can prolonged luteal phase.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Nice to hear from you all again.

Norethisterone can delay menses and can prolonged luteal phase.( post ovulatory phase)

If your boyfriend had sex on 2nd Feburary still the due date cannot be 13 th November.

So please don't get tense.

The probabilities of your boyfriend to be the father of a child is almost nil.

Hope it is useful, feel free to discuss more.

Good luck.

Thanks for this reply. Sorry to be a pain but does prolonged luteal phase mean that the chances of conceiving are smaller? Im trying to work out how this other guy would come into it. If she most likely conceived 20th of February and had intercourse with this other guy 26th of February, how does he fit into this whole equation and luteal phase?

Thanks

Brief Answer:
Prolonged luteal phase increases the chances of pregnancy

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Sorry for my delayed response as well.

Prolonged luteal phase increases the chances of pregnancy.

Another guy just fits in this scenario only when she had an irregular cycle after norethisterone tablet.

I have applied the most probable sexual intercourse date (on the due date basis) when her cycle was regular, if she had an irregular cycle then the date of ovulation is also unpredictable.

If her ovulation occurs around 24-25 the Februrary (around her sex date 26 th Feb), so she can be pregnant with another guy.

Hope it is useful, feel free to ask more.

Good luck.
