Brief Answer:
Thyroid function tests and ultrasound scan

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX
Thanks for writing in.

There is a systematic way that can be followed in case of suspected thyroid diseases. Most thyroid diseases are benign but rarely it can also be a cancer.

On suspicion of thyroid dysfunction, the first test that needs to be done is thyroid function tests which measures the level of hormones (T 3 and T 4) and TSH. This can be followed by an ultrasound scan of thyroid if needed. If the ultrasound scan shows nodules and altered areas then a FNAC test may be done, in which few of the cells will be picked out and analyzed under the microscope for any disease characteristics. Further nuclear scanning is also available for selective patients.

All tests are not meant for every patient and only the thyroid function tests and ultrasound scan are sufficient to detect problems in a patient with suspected thyroid dysfunction.

Hope your query is answered.
