How To Determine The Date Of Conception?
![default](/r/images/default.png)
Please help I am really confused. My last period was the 28th January 2017. I have a positive pregnancy test. I booked in for an early private scan where I thought I would be 8 weeks. They said I was 5 to 6 weeks and could only see gestational sac and yolk but no fetal pole. How can I only be 5 to 6 weeks pregnant if I not had a period for 8 weeks? I have no bleeding no pain or anything. Can I still have a healthy baby or has it died? Please help asap I am.worried sick its my first baby taken 5 years to conceive. My periods are between 24 days and 34 days so makes ovulation different each month. The sonographer didnt sound hopeful at all.
Wait for one more week.
Detailed Answer:
Hi, I think you should not take stress too much. Sometimes, there can be delayed implantation where ovulation is delayed and fertilisation is also delayed. In that case you can't calculate your periods of gestation from your last period. Also, your cycle is varying from 24 to 34 days, so it increases this possibility. As you told you don't have any pain or bleeding, it is a good sign. In my opinion, you should wait for one more week and repeat the scan to see the fetal pole. In the mean time, you can take some progesterone support. Discuss with your doctor regarding this. Don't worry too much as it also affects the pregnancy. Just wait for the next scan. It will clear all the doubts. Hope I have answered your question. If you have any other query, I will be happy to help.

Scan report is fine.
Detailed Answer:
Hi, I think the report is fine. Also your scan was done from abdomen, so better to do it vaginally next time. It will give a much clear picture. Transvaginal scan is much better to see the early pregnancy than the transabdominal scan. Talk to your doctor regarding this. Hope it helps.
Regards Brief Answer:
By measurements you are 6 weeks 3 days approximately.
Detailed Answer:
Hi, according to your reports, the mean sac diameter is around 17 mm. You can calculate gestation age by adding the mean sac diameter to 28 and find out the gestational age in days. So, in your case it comes to 45 days making it 6 weeks 3 days. Now, the thing is that the measurements vary from person to person, so these are not accurate. Normally fetal pole should be seen above a mean sac diameter of 16 mm, but in your case the difference is only 1 mm. So, considering a chance of interobservar variation, there is a chance of successful pregnancy. Seeing yolk sac is a good sign. You will have to wait for one week to get the final status. So, in my opinion you should hope for the best, but be prepared for everything. It is not the end of life. Hope I have answered your question. If you have any other query, I will be happy to help.

Yes, you can see a fetal pole.
Detailed Answer:
Hi, the mean sac diameter increases at a rate of atleast 0.6 mm to a normal of 1.2 mm per day, which is also variable for different persons. So, after 7 days , it should reach a size of around 21 to 25 mm. By then, fetal pole can be seen. But if sac size is 25 mm or more and you still dont see an embryo, NICE guidelines suggest to wait for one more week. Hope I have answered your question.
