Hello XXXX and welcome to HCM.
Your query is very interesting.
As an Urologist, i follow the standard protocol of initial Ultrasound scan of abdomen.
If any stone is seen or suspected, a plain MRI scan of abdomen in females is the best, as CT scan has a radiation exposure, while, Ultrasound and MRI don't have.
Stones are suspected, when a person has flank pain, and urine routine test shows blood cells. Person may also have nausea and vomitting.
Hope your doubt is cleared. You're welcome to contact me, if you've any other doubt.
Wishing the person a speedy recovery.
