There are two phase of sleep REM or Non REM sleep. Normally, while sleeping first non-rem sleep occurs and 45 min later rem sleep, but in depression, there is shortening of the time from sleep onset to the appearance of the first REM period. This shorting leads to sleep disturbance. Normally during sleep, body movement or dreams etc occur in REM sleep. In that case, solution is sleeping pills or treatment of depression. There is nothing to worry about these phase of sleep. Sometime, REM sleep latency also decreases during anxiety and it leads to sleep disturbance.
