Question: How to help my girlfriend through a TIA (mini stroke) ? she is 29, in great health, but as a result of her birth control she had a TIA yesterday. She was just discharged from the hospital today. What i'm reading online is scaring me. What can I do to help prevent a full stroke? Is this going to affect her lifespan?

Brief Answer:
More information would be useful.

Detailed Answer:
I read your question carefully and I understand your concern about your girlfriend.

However it would be useful to have some more info regarding the cause of stroke, in that manner future strokes can be prevented more appropriately. In any stroke patient a complete work up is needed to search for the cause of stroke, tests like brain imaging, imaging of the blood vessels, heart ultrasound and often a trans-esophageal heart ultrasound, coagulation panel etc. Since you seem to live in US, a country with an advanced diagnostic level I am sure if the doctors thought she had a stroke/TIA will have conducted such tests.
So perhaps you could try to upload the discharge papers for us to see what has been done and offer more specific advice.
In the meantime without that information at hand, only a blood thinner and the interruption of birth control can be advised. If she is a smoker quitting is imperative. Physical exercise and a healthy diet focusing on fruit and vegetables is advised.

I remain at your disposal for other questions.
