How To Increase My HDL Level?
Question: I did a lipid profile test 2 years back and 2 months back (as regular checkup). Everything looks normal, except HDL. My HDL on both of these reports are at 27 (45 is the min scale). My LDL is stay at 120 (<130 is within normal limit) on both the reports.
I am doing 30 mins cycling x 4 days a week, reasonably good diet (no junk food). However, I dont see change in my HDL?
1. How to increase my HDL? Any medications help?
2. How risky it is at 27?
Thanks,
XXXX

Detailed Answer:
Dear Sir
The best way to increase HDL is to exercise regularly. You can still increase the duration of exercise per week. Your weight should be optimal. A body mass index of 23 is ideal. For a male, HDL should be more than 40 mg per dl.
Medication is not recommended for increasing HDL in this profile. If you eat fish,it would be good to have at least 400gram per week. This will help.
Low HDL has not established itself as potential independent risk for heart attack as its treatment was not associated with significant reduction in heart attack.

Doctor,
Thank you.
FYI, My BMI is 25.9 (Weight: 82 Kg, Height: 178 cm).
I am eating fish. I will increases exercise time per week.
In order to get the BMI of 23, I need to reduce my weight by 9 kgs (82 to 73). Is it good by reducing the weight by diet control?

Detailed Answer:
Dear Sir
Definitely you need to reduce weight. This will require both increased exercise and diet control. None of them alone will be sufficient.
