How To Increase Platelets Count?
Question: My son is 24 years old and was admitted in hospital for Platelets count dropping to 4, (He has taken Covid2nd booster and Tetanus on the same day, in a day he saw all bruises on his body and doctor advised him to go for full blood draw) the results were low platelets count to 4 and we were in ER for 3 days. Hematologist gave him Dexamethasone 4 doses for 4 days. IVIG for 2 days 2 doses. Later he was home. His platelets went up to 381. After a week, again on a regular blood draw they fell to 4 and he was hospitalized, when hospitalized they fell to 1. He was again given the same medicine Dexamethasone and IVIG same as above doses. Now they introduced a new medicine Rituximab. The blood test after a day showed that the platelets were 181. After two days again on regular blood check they fell to 12. Now again we are in this confused state what is causing the blood platelets to fall like this. Any help is really appreciated. Note: All the rest of the blood results are normal except for the platelets count.
Brief Answer:
Hello dear. It looks like ITP
Detailed Answer:
Hello dear. I have gone through your query. So it seems as your son is suffering from Immune thrombocytopenic purpura which causes platelets to fall rapidly. A bone marrow biopsy is crucial to establish this diagnosis.
In such cases, we target a platelet count of 30000-50000 as that will prevent spontaneous bleed.
There are many options to keep platelet at that level including low dose steroids. You can discuss that with your physician.
Feel free to ask further.
Kind regards
