How To Keep Blood Pressure Under Control?

default
Posted on Wed, 10 Sep 2014
Question: I am 77 years old I take medication for blood pressure. Losartin 50 mgs. 2 x daily, and Toprol XL 25 mgs 2 times daily. 6 months ago I had a nuclear stress test and it was normal. I also take 81 mgs. aspirin daily and a water pill - 1/2 of a 25 mg. pill. Hydrochorothiazide. My BP, however, has never been under good control. Lately I've been having episodes starting about noon near my left carotid artery of just a strange tingling. I take my BP and it is usually okay. However, it begins to spike at noon and then just as quickly as it spikes....to 170/97....it returns to normal (for me)130/85 There is no pain at all just that feeling on my skin. It is sporadic. I also take my BP way too frequently and am a bit obsessed. Is this weird feeling on the left side of my neck a danger sign of stroke?

Brief Answer:
Unlikley to be a danger sign for stroke!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about these symptoms that you have reported. I understand they are of great concern to you and they keep you very worried. I will state clearly that these symptoms are greatly influenced and conditioned by you. It would be unlikely that an issue with the carotid artery would only produce symptoms around noon. This is not just possible and rather suggest a stored message on the mind about possible problems of the carotid and consequences. Please, be relaxed. These spike in blood pressure are related to the fear and anxiety as opposed to a poorly controlled blood pressure. This is evident as you may tell from the wide fluctuations that cannot be attributed to medications alone.

In all, your fear is accentuating these symptoms and making the whole picture concerning. I will suggest that you stay relaxed and tell yourself that you are not at any immediate danger. If any other issues should come up, report to your doctor for evaluation.

I hope this addresses your query fully. I wish you well. Thank you so much for using our services and do feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be.

This is not really a question, I guess, because your answer was spot-on. I forgot to mention that my left shoulder is bone-on-bone with osteoarthritis and needs replacement and until that is done, my left arm, neck and shoulder are very painful. Maybe that is causing the sporadic tingling in my neck. Fortunately I do have a hobby (have designed and edited the official website of legendary actress XXXXXXX O'Hara "Maureen O'Hara Magazine" for 20 years), so I will try to focus more on keeping that well researched and up to date. Thanks for your reassurance.
