How To Maintain Health Of Heart?

Question: Hello...I am a tall 69 year old male, not obese, excellent cholesterol numbers (under 200 mg.) and BP (118/57 - controlled)...

2 years ago, I was diagnosed with claudication and a moderate blockage in left femoral artery. I began walking and now walk a minimum of 4 times a week briskly for about 40 minutes each time. The pain has lessened and I can walk longer distances now. I had arterial ultrasound 2 years ago, and all is clean except for mild presence of atherosclerosis in right leg - same location as left one. Carotid is fine as is lower aorta and brain. I had an ecg two weeks ago and it is fine too. Also had an echogram of heart 2 years ago, and that is fine with exception of tiny leak in aortic valve. I am married and we eat what is recommended in Dr. XXXXXXX Fuhrman's book (Eat to Live), and NO beef etc. I have stopped smoking recently after about 40 years. Now that I stopped smoking, what type of outlook can I expect? Or is this all the start of the end? I am pretty discouraged and scared right now. I take Lipitor 40 mg, baby aspirin, Omega 3 fish oil and COQ10 daily plus other anti-oxidants. We cook with olive oil or coconut oil. Can you help with my anxiety? I want to be able to not worry as much as I am.

Detailed Answer:
Dear Friend.
Welcome To HCM. I am Dr Anshul Varshney.
I understand your concern.
I can assure you for one thing that you have your reports better then a young obese man without medications!!
Good news is that your arteries don't have any significant block.
Best thing is that you have given up smoking.
Once you stop smoking your lungs get almost like a normal person in 10 years.
And your further arterial blockage stops.
I don't know why are you disappointed. I really praise my patients who have such good improved reports.
Nothing to worry at all.
Keep on exercises.
In fact your medications are also perfect.
If God's will is there You will live pretty long life ahead according to reports.
If you have any questions I am here for you.

Dear Friend.
Sorry to hear about your mother.
Fact of life is that death can't be predicted. A lot people just die of accident and they don't have any Disease!!
So as far as your life style and your reports are considered your prognosis is excellent.
Stop worrying because worry increases the stress which effects your heart!!
I wish you a long , Healthy life.
I feel "Life should not be long, it should be just Healthy".
