How To Overcome Thyroid Pathologies During Pregnancy?

default
Posted on Thu, 1 Dec 2022
Question: Hi. I am 8 weeks pregnant and yesterday was told that I have hyperthyroidism. I was prescribed a medication called Levothyroxine. The medication info on paper and even online says it's to treat Hypothyroidism. I'm very concerned as I just suffered from a miscarriage this last April and know that this condition can cause miscarriage if not treated. I tried calling my OB office but he is out until next Thursday. Can this medication treat Hyperthyroidism??

Brief Answer:
About thyroid pathologies during pregnancy:

Detailed Answer:
Hello.

Levothyroxine is prescribed only in hypothyroidism (as it is a thyroid hormone and is given when the gland has underactive).

Probably the doctor may have said that TSH is high and that meant to say that you have hypothyroidism.

If the physician has recommended levothyroxine, do not doubt it but start treatment at the earliest to avoid miscarriage or other possible effects of hypothyroidism during pregnancy.

Do check TSH after 4 weeks to be sure that the dose is right.

Hope the information will help. Feel free to ask further.

Thanks,
Dr.Mirjeta
