Brief Answer: DETAILS ARE GIVEN BELOW. Detailed Answer: Hello, Thanks for writing to us. Followings are my comments: 1) MILD swelling or pedal edema is NORMAL during pregnancy period. Growing uterus puts pressure on vein, which impairs return of blood to heart. Retention of more fluids and hormonal changes also play an important role. However, we need to rule out Pregnancy Induced Hypertension or Pre-eclampsia in this context by checking Blood Pressure and Urine protein. Blood sugar should be ruled out. Kindly, consult with your Obstetrician for clinical examination and take proper medicine. Following steps are useful to prevent ankle and pedal edema: a) Sit with her feet elevated for as long as possible. Make sure that she does this at least twice a day, for 20 minutes each. b) Drink a lot of water, to ensure that your body remains hydrated and AVOID SALT/ salty foods. c) Engage in some form of exercise for around half an hour each day, especially walking or swimming. Do get a doctor’s approval before she starts exercising. d) Follow a healthy diet, which is high in vitamins, minerals, protein and other essential nutrients. STAY AWAY from junk food, fried food, processed food, as they are high in fat, calories and sodium. e) Soak feet in some warm water, to relieve the pressure on the blood vessels. A foot massage may also be helpful, but make sure that it is administered by a professional masseuse, who is well aware of her condition. 2) In twin pregnancy, total weight gain will be 15 to 20 kg. First trimester - 2.5 to 4.5 kg, Second trimester - 6.5 to 9 kg, Third trimester - 4.5 to 9 kg. Do periodic check up to her doctor with recoding monthly weight gain. It will be helpful to determine growth and development of growing babies. 3) Pelvic bone pain is COMMON thing during pregnancy period and it occurs due to relaxation of pelvic ligaments by RELAXIN hormone. Hot water bottle or bag will be helpful along with maintaining posture during sleep, sitting etc. Hope, it helps for your information. Kindly, close the discussion if you don't have any other query. Wish her good health and successful motherhood. Regards, Dr Soumen For future query, you can directly approach me through http://doctor.healthcaremagic.com/Funnel?page=askDoctorDirectly&docId=63326
