How To Rule Out Cancerous Anal Polyp?

default
Posted on Tue, 1 Dec 2015
Question: I had an anal polyp removal operation last Thursday.
Before and even after the operation, my doctor said that it had zero chance of being malignant.
He told this to me in the OT.
And when he came out,he said to my parents:"I'm oversure that it's not cancer.Still we have to send it for a routine biopsy."

Even I asked him on Wednesday.
He said :"Zero.Zero chance."

But I am still worried.

Can doctors say after they have operated if it has cancer or not?
If yes,how?
My size was 1-1.2cm.

Brief Answer:
It is highly unlikely for the Polyp to be cancerous.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
The Doctor is right.
Anal polyp that along with an anal fissure is highly unlikely to be cancerous.
It is usually due to the fissure itself.
The only way to confidently say that it is not cancerous is by the biopsy.
As the Polyp has been sent for biopsy you would come to know by the biopsy report whether there is any evidence of cancer in it or not.
During biopsy they cut the polyp down into miniscule pieces and then study it under a high power microscope to study the cells and the tissue in it. They can with relative confidence comment whether there is any doubt of cancer in it or not.
Therefore, do not worry and relax.
You should get the biopsy report 7 to 10 days after the surgery. That is the usual time taken for the biopsy.
Do let me know if there are any other concerns regarding this.
Take care,

Even on Wednesday he said it has zero chances.

what do you think?
he has also said that he is sending it because it is just routine and later questions may arise and because of mediclaim.

What do you think?

Brief Answer:
He is probably right and there is no need to worry.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
He is probably right but I cant say it has no chance as I have not seen the polyp.
Anyway, in my experience of fissures and polyps I have not come across even one that turned out to be cancerous.
Therefore, there is no need to worry.
Just relax and believe your Doctor.
Sending it for biopsy is definitely routine.
And you should wait for the report for written confirmation of the same.
That is routine practice. You dont need to get perturbed, just relax.
