How To Rule Out Chemical Pregnancy?
Question: I have had Paragard IUD for two years and always had a regular cycle. Have not missed any periods but have been spotting/bleeding for over a month. A few days ago I was feeling nauseous so on a whim bought two pregnancy tests. They both came out positive. Went to see Dr today for ultrasound and there is no embryo although I have been having moderate cramping all day as well as increased bleeding. Could this be a miscarriage or chemical pregnancy?
Brief Answer:
Less likely a chemical pregnancy.
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
If the pregnancy test is strongly positive- the test line is as dark as the control line then a chemical pregnancy is not likely. The cramping and bleeding can be due to the presence of IUD inside the uterus. It can cause a spontaneous abortion. You can get your serum beta HCG levels evlauated to find out for sure.

What are the chances that it is an ectopic pregnancy? Is that something that wouldve been seen with the external or internal ultrasound or does is that only looking at the uterus?
Brief Answer:
Ectopic pregnancy also needs to be ruled out.
Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
Ectopic pregnancy is also a possibility. It is detected by ultrasound scan- both internal and external. Uterus, both the ovaries and tubes are scanned properly during an ultrasound scan. It is best to get a repeat scan done after a week s your gynecologist has suggested.
Hope my answer is helpful.
