How To Treat Chronic Urinary Tract Infection?

default
Posted on Wed, 5 Jul 2017
Question: Hi, I had the flu and bronchial infection in February, along with this I had a bladder infection. I have had residual mild discomfort when voiding. I had one round of bactrim, that I found I was allergic to, and that seemed to deal with the major symtoms but this tenderness remains. I drink 8 oz of cranberry juice daily and have been careful not to have acidic foods. Ideas, please?

Brief Answer:
Management of chronic Urinary tract infection

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for trusting HealthcareMagic

The persistent pain indicate that there is still underlying chronic infection even after antibiotic therapy. If you are postmenopausal ,then atrophic urethritis/vaginitis associated can contribute to chronic bacterial infection.
Uterine prolapse can also present with such symptoms and persistent infection.
You will need a pelvic/vaginal examination, urine culture and analysis as initial screening .
Treatment of atrophic vaginitis/urethritis is with vaginal estrogen creams. Chronic UTI is treated with antibiotics depending on culture and sensitivity result. Some women require chronic antibiotic therapy too.
Also, drink plenty of water/fluids. You can continue cranberry juice.
Please be advised to follow up with a gynecologist/primary care provider for further evaluation and management.
