Hy - I Have Been Having Lower Right Back Pain

default
Posted on Fri, 9 Oct 2020
Question: Hy - I have been having lower right back pain for some time - usually occurring at 3-4 am in the morning and gradually lifting after I get up for the day.
But now it is getting worse and is likely to occur at any time - before it was quite mild - perhaps a 2-3 on a 10 point pain scale but now while it originates
in the same lower back, it is more painful at 4-5 and spreads. I have to take stronger and stronger pain killers to manage it. What do you suggest it is likely to be and what tests would you recommend? Thanks.

Hi there

Thanks for the query

Do you have low back pain that radiates to your legs?

Any pins and needles sensation over the legs?

Any bladder or bowel disturbances?

Since you have a background of Renal cell carcinoma it's best to get this evaluated by getting an xray and/or MRI lumbosacral spine to look for any metastatic deposits in the spine which can cause back pain.

Please do answer the above questions for me to be in a better position to help you.

I hope I have answered your query.

I will be available to answer your follow up queries.

Aashish Raghu

Dear Dr. XXXXXXX

1. No to all your questions - they were helpful, by the way. No radiating pain, bladder or bowel disturbance, or pins and needles sensations.

2. I don't know where you got your profile info but I have never had renal cell carcinoma - perhaps you confused me with another patient.

3. In light of the above, do you still recommend an MRI? I really don't like the experience and will only do if absolutely essential.

Thanks for the reply

I apologise for the mention about Renal cell carcinoma. It was indeed mentioned out of confusion.

I suggest you get physiotherapy to strengthen your back muscles and improve posture. MRI is not essential at this stage since you don't have nerve compression symptoms. Avoid bending forward or lifting heavy objects.
