Hy I Take DUSPATALIN RETARD ( Mebeverine Hydrochloride) 200 Mg

Question: Hy I take DUSPATALIN RETARD (mebeverine hydrochloride) 200 mg for occasional cramps perhaps caused by diverticulitis. It works very well for me. Unfortunately, it is not available where I live now. But they have MEBERVINE 138 mg.
Q1. Is it just as effective - if so, should I take 1 or 2 pills?
Q2 Without the "Retard" it means it is not slowly dissolved - will that affect results?

Your advice please.

Brief Answer:
The two medications belong to the same group of medicines.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

The two medications belong to a group of medicines called antispasmodics.

They have the same effect in the system.

So, you may take Meberverine 138 mg instead of Duspatalin.

You should take one tablet three times a day, preferably 20 minutes before meals.

Regarding the second query, Duspatalin is retard because it is a prolonged- release formulation.

The effect of Duspatalin is prolonged in time.

This is the only difference between the two medications.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thanks for answer. Follow up question: if I can get the duspatalin retard med - i.e. the prolonged release formula - is that better treatment than the simple Mebervine? Or net the result is the same in terms of its anti-cramping ability.

Often I take the DR when I get cramps - I don't automatically take it before meals. This works fine. So can I do the same with the Meb?

Brief Answer:
Duspatalin retard is better due to its prolonged release formula.

Detailed Answer:
Hi again dear,

In my opinion, Duspatalin retard is better due to its prolonged release formula.

So, if you can get Duspatalin retard I would recommend this medication.

As for the second query, both medications have the same anti-cramping effect.

So, in the case of cramps, you can take Mebeverine before the meals even without consulting the doctor first.

Hope my answer was helpful.

Take care,

Dr, Dorina Gurabardhi
