Question: I HAD MULTIPLE KNEECAP DISLOCATIONS IN HIGH SCHOOL WHERE MY KNEE SLID OUT AND BACK INTO THE SOCKET. IT NEVER STAYED OUTSIDE OF THE SOCKET. THIS HAPPENED TO BOTH KNEES MULTIPLE TIMES. THAT WAS 10 YEARS AGO AND NOW I AM GETTING INTO RUNNING AND FEELING DISCOMFORT ON THE INSIDE OF MY KNEES. POSSIBLY THE MPFL LIGAMENT? I AM WONDERING IF I NEED TO SEE A DOCTOR FOR THIS. MY KNEE DOESNT FEEL LIKE IT IS BUCKLING. I RAN ON IT TODAY AND WAS FINE, JUST UNCOMFORTABLE, MORE SO AFTER RUNNING THAN DURING. WOULD WEARING A BRACE FIX THIS ISSUE OR WILL RUNNING ON IT MAKE IT WORSE?

Brief Answer:
Hinged knee brace can be used.

Detailed Answer:
Hi Sir

Thank you for asking ask a doctor service.

I have gone through your query with diligence. Recurrent dislocation of patella can be due to weakening of thigh muscles. Weak or overstretched ligaments also can be the reason.
Doing quadriceps strengthening exercises will be helpful. You can the exercises like - Straight leg rise , hamstring curls, step ups, calf raises, wall squats.
While running its better to use hinged knee brace for support.
If still there is dislocating then surgical correction will be required.

Let me know if anything not clear.
I am happy to help.
Thanks.
