Question: I HAVE HAD A VERY SEVERE CASE OF ORAL LICHEN PLANUS
FOR 18-MONTHS. IT IS IN MY MOUTH ONLY. TWICE IT HAS
BEEN IDENTIFIED AS ORAL LICHEN PLANUS, & NOT CANCER.
ONE SORE IS AN OPEN SORE. I HAVE TRIED ANTIHISTOMINES, EMOLIENTS, STEROID OINTMENTS & TABLETS, CLOBETASOL CREAM, DAPSONE TABLETS---NOTHING HELPS. SHOULD I TRY MYCOPHENOLATE MOFETIL ??????? I AM 77 YEAR OLD FEMALE & IN GOOD HEALTH.

Hi and Welcome to "Ask A Doctor" service. I have read your question and here is my advice.
Sorry to hear about the problem. Sometimes treating lichen planus may be very difficult. While in such cases a number of immunosuppressive drug are used. I understand you have already exhausted many of the used drugs.
Regarding mycophenolate mofetil, it's not commonly used in LP, however it may be used after a specialist advice with your consent.
There have been no lot of data regarding its use but keeping the pathalogy of LP, it may be used and be effective. But as said earlier, the drug has not been extensively studied, its used would need specialist advice and your consent.
However , such lesion must be biopsied (if already not biopsied) to rule out any malignmant transformation.
