Question: I am 31 years old and have a 7 month old daughter. I am breastfeeding my daughter and she is not on formula or any other kind of milk supplement. I am planning to travel for approximately 18-20 days and therefore want to delay my period. Can I take primolut n or regestrone tablet for the same without adversely affecting my milk supply or any other side effect on my baby. If not, please suggest any other suitable medicine for the same.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for sharing your health concern with us.

Any medication has to be used with caution during pregnancy and lactation and only if absolutely necessary.

Norethisterone has not been shown to have significant affect on the baby or the milk secretion in studies. Medroxyprogesterone is another alternative and so is progesterone in micronized form.

Please plan further management after contacting your health care provider. If on medication, it is preferable to feed the baby ahead of taking the medication. Use the medication in the lowest possible dose and the shortest time needed.

Hope you find this information useful. Please feel free to contact for further clarifications. I will be happy to help.

regards,

Thank you for your time doctor. Based on your response, would appreciate if you could advise the name of specific medicine and dosage thereof. Also, maximum days for which I can take the medicine safely and avoid thereafter.

Hi,

Thanks for writing back.

Before suggesting anything, I would like to know how many days of postponement you need, when is your last menstrual period, what is the length of your cycle and if you are on any contraception.

Please send the information required. I will try to do the needful.

regards,
Shanti.V.
