I Am 71. I Have Knots And Disfiguration In Some

Question: I am 71. I have knots and disfiguration in some of the fingers of my left and right hands. Also swelling and pain in both wrists at the joints at the base of the wrists. It really really flares up when I play golf or hit ground balls to my baseball team. The finger joins that are disfigured are the last joints before the end of the fingers. How do you tell if it’s osteo arthritis or rheumatoid arthritis? What could my primary care doc do???
Brief Answer:
osteoarthritis
Detailed Answer:
hi, this looks like osteoarthritis.
your symptoms are suggestive of OA.
the diagnosis is generally made on history and clinical exam.
other confirmatory tests are Rheumtoid factor, anti ccp which will be negative in OA.
the ESR, CRP will also be normal in OA.
the treatment is supportive with exercises and orthotics playing a role.
hope this helps
