Question: I am a 26 year old female that is into fitness. For the past 2 years i have been taking levothyroxine at 25mcg dailly. I have no hypothyroid DX but felt my thryroid was slow to begin with. I have been off the med for 16 days and regardless of diet and cardio training, my weight seems to keep rising each week. Is there a chance i harmed my thyroid? i weigh 125lbs and when i started taking the med i was 152lbs, i feel like my weight i lost is going to end up coming back that i lost

Brief Answer:
No serious concerns of thyroid damage...

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

When on thyroid supplements, body relies on supplements and endogenous secretion of thyroid hormone reduces / stops. Therefore as you stopped supplements suddenly, you may have temporary shortage of thyroid. Thus the weight gain. Further, the diet should be changed when you are off thyroid supplements to help you keep weight.

This doesn't mean, you've harmed thyroid gland. Body will over the period of time be able to rectify the shortage. It would be worthwhile to get TSH level checked to know the current thyroid state. If necessary thyroid supplement can be restarted and tapered off accordingly.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you need clarifications.

I have been keeping my diet and calories low and still seem to be putting on weight. How long does it take on average to recover? I feel like all the weight i lost is going to end up coming back on within a few months

Brief Answer:
Get TSH level checked...

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Since the weight change occurred right after stopping levothyroxine abruptly, I cannot ignore hypothyroid state. Therefore get your TSH level checked. If necessary, supplements should be restarted and tapered off as per future TSH value. You should also check blood sugar level tested.

There are few other rarer causes of weight changes; but at this point I don't feel it is to be considered. You can contact your local doctor, get the initial two tests done and take it forward.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you need clarifications.

Regards
