Question: I am a 36 year old female who for the most part is healthy. For about 3 years now I have had gross hematuria in my urine that lasts about a day and only happens about 3-4 times a year. I’ve had blood tests, xrays, CT scans and urine tests that have showed nothing. What does this mean?

Brief Answer:
Consider Contrast CT scan and MRI

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for trusting us with your health concern

The presence of gross hematuria which is recurrent needs further evaluation. Since your initial urine tests and CT scans did not provide any clear answers, it is recommended to consider a contrast CT scan and/ MRI imaging study to rule our ureteric/kidney stones, or mass occupying tumors. Discuss the need for renal biopsy with your doctor, especially if you have a family history of kidney disorders.

If no causes are then identified, hematuria can be attributed as idiopathic, which means there are no underlying causes of concern for your hematuria requiring treatment.
