Question: Brief Answer:
Please give details and post actual photographs.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query.
Noted your history well and understood the concerns.
Blotchy purple area on one foot for one month turning to red on using calf compression sock can be due t one of the following reasons:
Varicose veins being the commonest and due to obesity would be difficult to notice. Hence needs color doppler examination of the lower limb to ascertain.
Local skin problems; please sent focused and clear photos as these can help me a lot.
Reduced common salt intake can help to control hypertension.
Elevation of foot and leg above heart level in lying down position may help.
But it is better to stop local icing or so as these can cause problems with already changes skin conditions; do not apply anything locally.
Watch if calf compression sock is actually helping or worsening the skin condition.

I hope this answer helps you.
Awaiting for your feedback and clear, focused photos.

I am a 43 year old male, morbidly obese and an alcoholic. I quit smoking a 4 months ago. I am not diabetic yet, tested with fasting glucose at the my doctor last year, and I continue to monitor my blood glucose every other week or so. A month ago my left foot showed a lot of blotchy purple areas, seems more reddish now. I am not on any medication, I have elevated my foot, iced it, warm epsom soaks. There was never any trauma and no pain associated with it. I did notice a large increase in my blood pressure in the months after quitting smoking, not saying it caused it, I was pre-hypertension prior and now can test 162/93 on a rare day. I have been trying a calf compression sock this week and this is the the week it went from purple to red. I live in a rural area with daily obligations, so any opinion would help me in proceeding.

Brief Answer:
As discussed

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for the photo.
This looks to be due to varicose veins.
Please get the color doppler done.
Also get the blood tests, particularly for bleeding time, clotting time, prothrombine time, CBC with platelet count, just to be sure.

I hope this answer helps you.
Please give feedback once the investigations are done to be sure about a proper diagnosis so that a proper management can be planned.
