Question: I am a 63 year old male and have had OCD for the last 30 years. I have suffered from the sexual side effect of the SSRI. I am now on trintellex. I have been on it approx. 1 year. I understand the new SSRI have less sexual side effects then the older one like prozac. Recently my libido has dropped and i have not been able to climax for the last 5 weeks. I take 100mg of viagra but as you proxac does nothing libo or climax it only gives you a erection which great for my partner . To complicate matters I got a a enlarge prostate a year ago . I was treated with the testosterone blocker proscar and the alpha blocker cardura. I stopped taking proscar 6 months ago and only take cardura. I am also taking the GNC nugenics that my doctor recommended. He receently took my testosterone level and it was 526.0 ng/dl.. I am also schedule to a sex psychologist this thursday. I am very frustrated. Why cant they have drug that blocks the sexually side effects of the SSRI I cannot go off of the trintellix .do to my OCD. I am also seeing a psychologist for cognitive behaveur theraphy with exsposue. But it is not enough a lone.

Brief Answer:
Probably consider taking an alternative antidepressant such as Wellbutrin.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Your symptoms seem to be related to side effects of Trintellix. Antidepressants are known to cause low libido. Some other the possible side effects of antidepressants can be erectile dysfunction, and difficulties with orgasm.

Some options to avoid these side effects can be:

1) Reviewing the dose with your doctor. A lower dose may cause fewer side effects

2) Taking an alternative medication.
Wellbutrin is an antidepressant which is just as effective as other antidepressants with nonsexual side effects. I suggest you consult your doctor about this treatment.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
