Brief Answer:
Imaging will help in detecting nerve root compression.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The chronic back pain that you are having for a long time can be related to spondylottic changes of the spine and herniated discs. The imaging will help us in detecting the extent of nerve root compression or the herniation and will detect any impending nerve root compressions. The need of surgical correction can also be assessed. It is best to go with your orthopedician's advise and get MRI scan done.
I hope this answers your query.
