Question: I am a 75 year old male, never ...EVER... smoked, am 5'8" tall and weigh 275.
I have A-fib since 2012.
when I awoke this am and got out of bed, I experienced a loss of balance as I walked 10 feet to the bathroom..(but did not fall).
As this day progressed, i 'experimented' by, while sitting and standing, tiltling my heard straight back looking up to the ceiling. When I lowered my head to it's normal position, I immediately was very light-headed...dizzy...momentarily. What are you thoughts, DR?

Brief Answer:
positional vertigo?

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

welcome to 'Ask a Doctor' service. I've gone through your query and I want to share some thoughts about it with you.

Loss of balance may be caused by various disorders like an arrhythmia (for example a worsening of atrial fibrillation), hypotension, dehydration, etc but in your case the most likely cause is probably benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV). Moving the head causes vertigo which usually lasts for a few seconds (and may also start a few seconds after moving the head). If this is indeed the cause then it can be treated with a series of maneuvers that an ENT specialist can perform.

So in conclusion, BPPV sounds like the most likely cause of your symptoms and the best course of action is to visit your doctor for confirmation, assessment and appropriate treatment.

I hope I've answered your question. Please let me know if you need further assistance.

Kind Regards!
