Question: I am a young 63 year old fairly active female. I work with my hands and also use my hands for various hobbies. While using my hands I have little or no pain, however soon after use, my hands swell and pain becomes unbearable. Especially below my thumbs, with quite severe shooting pains that bring me to tears. What could be causing this? Thank you, VK

Brief Answer:
Can be related to tendonitis.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The pain and swelling of the hands specially after working with shooting pains can be related to tendonitis. The different tendons of the hand can become inflamed with movement and can cause such pain. Usually mild pain killers help in relieving the pain. Any nerve compression in the area also need to be ruled out. But it is best to get an MRI scan of the hand done and consult an orthopedician for a physical examination and proper diagnosis and prescription medicines.
I hope this answers your query.
