I Am Experiencing Pain In My Foot, My Hip, My

Question: I am experiencing pain in my foot, my hip, my groin and my lower back. My foot is also swollen and twisted. This all began after my knee replacement surgery in XXXXXXX When I awoke from the surgery my foot was twisted to a 30 degree angle. I was assured that this was temporary however now the surgeon says it did not happen in surgery. My foot makes walking difficult and painful. My foot slides off the accelerator and moving my foot from the accelerator to the brake causes pain in my groin. The surgeon thought that I might have arthritis of the hip. I had an X-ray no arthritis

Brief Answer:
Swelling and pain are normal but twisting needs further evaluation

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to "Ask a Doctor' service,

I carefully read your query.

Knee surgery may cause the patient to have some swelling and pain under the knee level (lower leg and foot) and also some hip and low back pain. This is because the pain in one area in the leg may cause pain in other areas close by due to strain that happens from the knee pain. So, I think it is normal to have some swelling and pain as you explain and it should start to be better within the first few months from the surgery.

On the other hand, the twisting of the foot is not a common finding. A neurological examination is needed to rule out nerve damage and also possibly some x-rays of the foot and leg to evaluate the bones and joints.

After such examinations, the doctor will have a better understanding of the cause of the twisted leg and will determine further steps.

I think that you will also need some physiotherapy to help with the pain, other than using pain killers. A combination of pain killers, brace and physiotherapy will help you feel better sooner.

I hope this answers your query. I remain at your disposal in case further medical assistance is needed.
