I Am Having Digestive Issues And Iud Side Effects Even
Timeline: April/May/June: Started eating salads for the first time in life. Really liked them. Started having issues then. Upper right sided pain during eating. I would also feel like my throat was closing (even though it wasnt).
Got Mirena Iud placed June: Only had it in 4 weeks. I had really scary side effects. Previously used Fertility Awareness Method. Have not been on hormones in over 10 years. The next week after insertion, the whole right side of my body went numb. That eventually subsided. Had extreme nausea and fatigue, flu like symptoms, achy legs, joint pain, extreme sensitivity to light. Got it out after 4 weeks. I am now 3 months post removal and am doing much better. Most of all my symptoms have subsided except for leg aches sometimes. I used to be a runner, and would run 4 times a week. I have not ran since XXXXXXX because of my symptoms.
July: thought I got injured while running. Hip pain on right side of body sometimes down leg. I thought I strained my body picking up some heavy furniture. Was feeling pain in my right side back and right side abdomen, right hip and down leg.
This has not subsided.
I am puzzled at what is causing my stomach pain on the right side. I want to know if it is coming from an organ or if it is muscular. It has been months now and I have had several test.
CT Scan of Abdomen July 2019- Normal
Gallbladder- 3mm polyp, no gallstones
3 bloodwork test- all 3 normal with vitamin deficiency at 16 which I now take medication for.
Pain is in two areas of abdomen. Upper right stinging sensation sometimes with dull ache. Never sharp. Comes and goes. Sometimes days without it. Can never figure out what triggers it. Pain in between stomach and belly button on right side that radiates to back. Feels like burning sometimes as well. Can never figure out what triggers it. I have worried that it could be my kidney but I have had 3 blood test come back normal. Creatine 1.0, and When I went to the ER had a urine analysis and it came back normal.
I am now taking digestive enzymes, probiotics and inflacalm. Can you help me figure out what this dull ache on my right side upper and middle stomach could be?
No diarrhea, my stools float, color brown and no vomiting. I noticed when I was in my worst bit of digestion problems, celery juice really helped. I was so nauseated, unable to eat, and when I drank it, I passed gas over 80 times that day. I felt so much better. But the dull ache is still there. Pain scale from 1-10 is 2/3.
Thank you in advance for your help.

Hello and welcome to "Ask a Doctor" service,
I carefully read your query.
Because the abdominal CT scan is normal and you have no gallbladder stones and no other abnormalities with the other organs in your tummy, the most likely cause of your abdominal pain is the bowel. It may be due to constipation or due to irritable bowel syndrome.
I would recommend you to use Movicol 1-2 sachets a day to help your stools be soft and ease the transit in the bowel. You can also try Buscopan to help with bowel spasms (one tablet every 8 hours).
Peppermint is found to help relieve bowel spasms as well. Probiotics can be used in cases with IBS (irritable bowel syndrome). You need to drink plenty of fluids and avoid caffeine, alcohol and in some cases, patients need to avoid gluten (avoid food with gluten). Keeping active and exercising is found helpful for the bowel.
If these measures do not help enough, your doctor may order a colonoscopy and some stool tests to rule out certain bowel problems.
As for the leg and hip pain, very likely they are not directly related to abdominal pain. If you have a higher hip than the other one, then you will need to have a maneuver to help both hips be at the same level (the physiotherapist should be able to do this) and then you need exercises to help with muscle spasms and strengthen weakened muscles to prevent it from happening again.
You will need several sessions with the physiotherapist to have proper treatment and follow up and very likely you will need to do exercises at home.
Also, if there is a disc prolapse (the disc between two vertebra shifts to the side), a nerve root can be pinched and cause pain that radiates from the lower back to the hip and down the leg of that side.
A good neurological exam is needed to rule out damages of the nerves. Even in the case of a disc prolapse, physiotherapy is one of the best means to help control the pain. Also, ibuprofen after food and keeping active as much as you can.
An x-ray of the hip joint and also an x-ray of the spine may be needed to rule out arthritis.
If treatments for the leg and back pain and also the treatments for the abdominal pain are not bringing much relief then medications for chronic pain such as antidepressants may help to attain control of your symptoms. These would be SSRI drugs such as sertraline, for instance, or amitryptiline. These would need to be taken daily and a patient would need regular visits with a doctor while using these pills.
I hope this answers your query.
I remain at your disposal for further medical assistance.

Hello and welcome back,
Thank you for your reply. It is my pleasure to assist you.
For the burp feeling in the throat after eating there are a few things that you may do:
- eat frequent small amounts of food, so avoiding large meals and avoiding coffee, smoking, alcohol, and also food that you find make you worse (spicy, fried or junk food) may make you feel better. These will reduce the acid reflux in the throat after food.
- Omeprazole 20 mg 30 minutes before breakfast can be helpful as well as this reduces the acids in your stomach and may help with the reflux of the acids in the throat after food and will reduce the burp feeling as well.
