Magnesium may have caused diarhea
Detailed Answer:
HI,
There are few possibilities here that may be causing your problem.
1; Magnesium may well cause diarrhea , so it is one possibility but with this dose of magnesium the diarrhea should not be this much severe and should have been much better now after you stopped taking magnesium. Similarly the fever rigors and chills are unlikely with magnesium. So we just need to think a little more if something else can be responsible for the diarrhea;
2; There is a possibility that you might have caught a gastroenteritis. That might be caused by some infection. The fever rigors and chills and the high frequency of diarrhea make me think about this.Most of gastroenteritis are caused by viral infection and they resolve itself in few days like 4 to 7 days. In such cases you just need to take more and more fluids to avoid dehydration;Its great that you are already taking it.Sometimes diarrhea may be severe to warrant intravenous fluids. That's when you can't take fluid or you feel very exhausted or fainting .
Though mostly viral ,Sometimes gastroenteritis may be caused by bacterial infection .This causes fever with diarrhea which may be high grade and some times blood in stool. Here we need to take antibiotics for the infection besides taking fluid.
So what should we do now ?
I would say that stopping magnesium was very right .Taking fluid is best and is the main treatment of loose motions most of the times. Take as much fluid as you can. If fever is not high grade, or it is not increasing, and you don't feel fainted, and there is no blood in the stool, we can just wait with more and more fluids that it should settle whether its viral gastroenteritis or effect of magnesium. Besides fluid you may also take paracetamol for fever. You can also take some anti-emetic for the vomiting, like dimenhydrinate (gravinate) or prochlorperazine if needed.
However if you feel fainted, or fever is not coming down, or there is blood in stool or you feel unwell, or the diarrhea is increasing then you should talk to your doctor as you may need antibiotics ( if bacterial) or Intravenous fluids if dehydrated .
Hopes i have answered your question .Please feel free to ask anything else you need to know about this.
kind Regards
Dr Rahman
