Question: I am having significant knee pain when walking. I have been having a dull ache for a while with a ratchet type crunching when I go up the stairs but last night coming down the stairs I had a pop and a severe pain. I have taken Aleve and iced it. It feels better when I am mon weight bearing but to walk for any distance is almost unbearable.

Brief Answer:
further evaluation needed...

Detailed Answer:
Hello there,
Welcome to 'Ask A Doctor' service...
I've gone through your query in details...
I can understand your concerns...

Well, as per your description it seems like an ongoing issue. The fact of the matter that it's popped could be due to the further wear-tear type of injury in and around the knee joint (most notably the Patellar cartilage, underlying joint space and the supporting ACL, MCL, PCL ligaments)...

In order to confirm the diagnosis, an MRI of the knee joint should be done...Please discuss this with your doctor and proceed further...

Meanwhile, for symptomatic relief, please follow these bits of advice:

-Avoid Squatting, cross-legged sitting, better to avoid weight bearing for the time being as they may further worsen the injury

-Quadriceps Exercises- Lie down straight, make a towel roll, put it under the knee, press the keen against the role, hold it for about 15-20seconds. Repeat the same for about 15-20 times twice daily.

-Please take rest for another few days. Avoid any form of strenuous activities/exercises till further stabilization of the joint

-Yes, you may continue taking Aleve for another 2-3 days, afterwards take ACETAMINOPHEN (Eg. Tylenol) 650mg thrice daily after some food

-Continue ice compression for another 24hrs, keep the knee straight as much as possible, better to keep it elevated for the time being...

You'd be feeling better within a while...but do get the MRI done afterwards and get an Orthopedics check-up as further management course will depend on that...

Let me know if I can assist you further...

Take Care
Kind Regards
