Question: I am sixty five with a forty year old girlfriend who has never had children. We had unprotected sex twice a fortnight ago - but she did use a spermicide. Is there any danger - given out advanced ages and the spermicide - of pregnancy?

Brief Answer:
A very small risk of Pregnancy still remains.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to Ask a Doctor.
I am Dr Ramadevi Wani. I will be answering your concerns today.

As you know Spermicide is not 100% effective.
Though at the age of 40, chances of pregnancy are less, a small risk still remains.
Thus an extremely small risk of pregnancy remains.
Best wishes.

Dear Dr Wani - that is good news. Let me also ask this. My girlfriend told me she used spermicide. We got back together after a breakup. If she didn’t use it is the risk still low, given her age and my age (at 65 I am not as fertile as I once was... or so I am presuming)? I read that a woman over 40 onomastique à 5% chance of conception per month. Your thoughts please...

Brief Answer:
Details below.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome back.
Yes. At 40 her chances of conception per cycle are around 5 %.
The spermicide gives about 75% protection. So in her case she still has a 2% chance of conception. I would also like to tell you that women who conceive after 40 years have a 30-40% chance of abortion.

To help you better I would like to know details about her menstrual cycles. Are they regular? When did she start her last menstrual cycle? IF the unprotected sexual act was in the first week of her menstrual cycle, then usually there is no chance of she getting pregnant.
Regards
