Question: I am very overweight; 165 lb; 5'-2", 75 yr old married male. Two stents that work well, but weight is taking toll on my ability to exercise and breathe deeply. Otherwise, very healthy. Am concerned about a bulge on left side of abdomen below rib cage, making me asymmetric, and giving me trouble in bending in that direction more so than towards right side. No pain. Has been developing for about 10 years. Am told it is a harmless growth of fat tissue. I estimate is to be about 1/3 cubic ft in volume. (Using density of H2O, maybe about 20+ lbs. Would it be wise to look into getting it removed? Will it shrink as I diet and lose weight?

Brief Answer:
Does not shrink by diet or loosing weight. Please see detailed answer.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

I have gone through your query and here is my advice.

As per your history, it may be Lipoma. It does not shrink by diet or loosing weight.

Though it is easily diagnosed by simple physical examination, still to confirm diagnosis I would suggest you to do ultrasound and computed tomography scan.

Usually lipoma is harmless so no need to remove it. But in your case, size of 20+ lbs is quite large and interfering with your daily activities.

So as per my knowledge, I think it can be removed after detailed medical examination and evaluation by gastro surgeon and cardiologist's opinion.

Let me know I can assist you further...

Regards,
Dr Shyam Kale.
