Question: I am wondering if I should get an endoscopy. I was diagnosed with Gerd and hiatial hernia five years ago. I have recently been experiencing worse regurgitation, and have back pain between my shoulder blades and neck stiffness. Scared I might have esophageal cancer

Please provide some more information

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for using "Ask a doctor" service.

Only what you are describing does not indicate a possible esophageal cancer. It can be many things, from a muscular back pain, to a pancreatic problem.

I do not see from your description if you were treated five years ago for GERD and Hiatal Hernia. If yes, what treatment did you take and for how long? Have you had many flareups during these 5 years? Do you have other symptoms now except the pain between the shoulders?

The more information you give me, better I will be able to advice.

Looking forward to your follow up question.

Kind regards, Dr. Klarida Papaqako, General and Family physician.

I was given omeprazole when I was diagnosed. I took that for three years, until one of my primary doctors proposed I stop, due to the possible side effects it could cause. I have started taking an otc acid reducer, but only started four days ago. As for symptoms, I have the back and neck pain which radiates down both arms sporadically. I have the reflux, regurgiatation, sporadic diarrea, remitting abdomial and chest pain. I used to be a heavy drinker, but have drank moderately the last two years, and have been abstinate for 30 days. I am not sure if maybe I am just experiencing anxiety.

Brief Answer:
Consider seeing a local doctor to examine you.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thank you for the follow up question.
What you are describing doesn't seem like a esophagus cancer. It seems more that you have a muscular/ nerve neck/back pain.
Esophagus cancer would start usually with difficulty swallowing and loss of appetite.

Since you have the chest pain, you should difficulty do something about these symptoms. I don't have the full information about you so you will need to see a local doctor to evaluate you thoroughly. Maybe all the symptoms are connected or maybe not. We cannot say it is anxiety until it is proven that these symptoms are nothing organic.

I hope I have answered your question.

Kind regards,
Dr.Papaqako
