Question: I believe I ate contaminated tuna melt last week. I violently thru up and had diarrhea throughout the night. Felt better for two day. Had diarrhea two nights latter. felt ok for three days and now am dealing with diarrhea again, for most of the night. I must have some type of dysentery bacteria in my digestive tract. What is the best way to treat this problem. This is the sixth day and three bouts with stomach issues, nausea, slight headache and diarrhea.

Detailed Answer:
Hi....
Welcome to "Ask a Doctor" service.
I am Dr Ajeet XXXXXXX

I have gone through your query and here is my opinion.

You are quite right.
For such a patient,my first diagnosis would be food poisoning secondary to eating contaminated fish.

Most people recover from it,within a few days at home.

Your first priority should be to keep yourself well hydrated and prevent dehydration and loss of electrolytes.
Have ORS Solution.
Have bland and soft diet.
Generally BRAT diet is advised: bananas, rice (white), applesauce and toast.
Try bland foods, such as crackers, toast, and bananas.
Avoid spicy,heavy,oily,greasy food.
Avoid non veg.
Avoid milk.
Avoid caffeine,carbonated beverages and alcohol.
You can take anti-diarrhea medication such as Imodium, which are over the counter drugs.
Use probiotics.

The symptoms of poisoning due to fish can last for 1 to 2 weeks.
Exactly how long they last will depend on the amount of poison you have in the body.

If you have vomitings (Dehydration can be dangerous),you develop fever, you have blood in stool or the symptoms persist, you should immediately report to your doctor.

Hope that I have answered your query.

Stay healthy and stay blessed.
Regards.
