Question: I fell a couple of hours ago. I now have what appears to the touch to be a blister about the size of a half dollar on the back of my head. It's soft and when I touch it, my hand comes away with blood on it. Can you give me any information?

Brief Answer:
CT scan of head may be recommended for any risk factors

Detailed Answer:
Hello, I'm Dr. Branch, thanks for using 'Ask a Doctor'. What you describe sounds like a small hematoma, or collection of blood under the skin, with a small wound that appears to be bleeding as well. This by itself is nothing to be concerned about, and should heal fine on its own.

With any head trauma, however, there are certain things we look out for to make sure you don't need a CT scan to look for any bleeding inside of the brain. For any patient who loses consciousness, has any vomiting, is 65 years old or older, or is on any blood thinners, we would typically check a CT scan.

I hope that helps, please let me know if you have any other questions about that, and I would be glad to discuss it with you further.
