I Had 2 MRCPs Done In 2014 Due To CBD

Question: I had 2 MRCPs done in 2014 due to CBD dilation. The first one said ‘subtle meniscus with cut off at the distal cbd questioning a distal CBD stone’. My doctor at the time questioned that so he ordered another MRCP and that one showed no evidence for stones or masses. I also had blood tests (Ca-19) etc... those were normal. For some reason, 6 1/2 years later, I am now becoming worried that the 1st MRCP was correct but that it showed something malignant (vs a stone) that the 2nd MRCP missed. Is this concern, given the time that has past, unreasonable? In other words, is it reasonable to assume that if I had a CBD malignancy 6 1/2 years later I would have had more symptoms (I’ve had none) or I would have died.

Hi,
Thanks for posting your query.

It is unlikely to be CBD malignancy.
Because if left untreated it would have progressed and you would have developed complications like jaundice and also the five year survival if left untreated would be less than 5%.

That’s what I thought. In fact, I researched and the 5 year survival rate of untreated CBD cancer is virtually 0%.
I was just concerned because I made the mistake of googling the wording on the 1st MRCP that said ‘abrupt cut off’ and all I read was that this was a sign of malignancy. But that report also said ‘subtle meniscus’ and I googled that and that was suggesting of a stone. Not sure why my doctor ordered another MRCP but that 2nd one showed nothing.

So am I correct to assume that an abrupt cut off in the distal cbd can be as a result of a cbd stone? And given that my first MRCP said that and the 2nd MRCP did not see that that the explanation is that the stone moved or was passed before the 2nd MRCP was done.
