I Had A Cervical Fusion In July Of 2019 On
Question: I had a cervical fusion in July of 2019 on C5 C6 and C7. A plate a screws was put in. I rested for many months, but started to lift weights again after about 5 or 6 months. Some days I would feel aching in my neck. After a break of some day or a week I would feel better. I read online that it can take 12 to 18 months to fuse. I have aching again since I worked out Monday. I do not want to do damage to the upper and lower areas where my fusion was. I do not have any numbness or tingling, but the back of my neck aches and I have had a headache today on and off which I never get normally. At what point should I be concerned and see a doctor or do you feel this is just natural pain from lifting weights and that I may not be fully healed potentially? It seems getting an MRI is like pulling teeth these days even with good insurance. Do you see many patients through the years who have had a cervical fusion reinjure it soon or even the upper or lower discs go bad within a few years?
Brief Answer:
About cervical disc herniae:
Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for asking!
I have gone carefully through your concern.
If the pain persists after a trauma ( or lifting weighs) in a patient who underwent an intervention for cervical herniae, the MRi should be repeated, as it is the only way to evaluate the situation.
It will give an information regarding to the fusion of the cervical disc and depending on it the further follow up will be decided. The outcome is individual and depending on MRi report we can give better suggestions.
Meanwhile you will continue with pain killers.
Hope the information will help.
Best wishes
