I Had A Miscarriage 8 Days Ago. I Was Only

Question: I had a miscarriage 8 days ago. I was only approximately 5 1/2 weeks along in the pregnancy. I have been to the doctor twice regarding it. My latest lab results still show very low levels of hcg hormone. However, since last week, I have had constipation, gas, bloating and cramps in my stomach and lower back. Is this all a normal part of miscarriage? The cramping was very intense 8 days ago ranging from 7-10 on a pain level scale of 1-10. However, it had decreased a lot after the first two days of miscarriage. For the past five days, I've had only some mild discomfort in upper and lower abdomen ranging around a pain level of 1-2, but it was nothing that stopped me from my normal activities. However, today, cramps increased a lot to a level of 5 in my lower back and all over my stomach. There is no bleeding and stools are normal although I have been experiencing constipation. I have another appointment on July 1st, but do I need to see a doctor earlier because of these symptoms? (I don't have insurance). Is it normal for the GI tract to be a little abnormal after a miscarriage? Are there any natural, home remedies you would suggest? Thank you!

Brief Answer:
Antispasmodics will help.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.

The pain in the back and lower abdomen can be related to uterine cramps or constipation.

Mild pain is usually seen for 7-10 days after a miscarriage. You can take a mild laxative (Metamucil or psyllium) and an over-the-counter antispasmodic like Pepto Bismol twice a day to help with this pain.

This seems to be a minor issue and is likely to settle on its own in the next few days.

You can also do a hot compress to relax the painful contractions.

Please feel free to discuss further. I will be glad to answer the follow-up queries that you have.

Wishing you good health.
